“...and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.”
The old adage “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is not true. Words can do a great deal of damage to those who have been slandered. Slander simply put is malicious lying. And we know God hates lying (Proverbs 6:16-19, 12:22). The Bible has a lot to say about slander and its evil nature. Slander is full of untruths, it stands directly in opposition to God’s nature and is repulsive to him. As followers of Jesus we need to be watchful of our own tongues not to speak falsehoods and fall into the trap of slander ourselves.
Slander was a form of persecution that the Christians of the Church of Smyrna were facing. They probably lost jobs, faced imprisonment and even death as a result of people’s slander. It would be so easy to want to fight slander with slander. And yet, that isn’t who God has called us to be. The New Testament references slander as part of our old sinful nature. Slander has no place in our lives when we become new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Colossians 3:7–8
“You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”
Those who know God have a responsibility to refrain from slander: “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be” (James 3:9–10). Slander is one practice that must be put to death if we intend to follow Jesus (see Romans 6:11–14).
So how do we maintain our walk of holiness even when falling under the persecution of slander? Here are some helpful tips, though I recognize they aren’t easy:
Be slow to speak (James 1:19-20)
Forgive (Matthew 6:14-15)
Face the slanderer biblically (Matthew 18:15-17)
With this in mind, pray asking God to help you in controlling your own tongue to walk faithfully even in the midst of slander.
Sample Prayer:
“Holy God, thank you for your forgiveness and setting me free from my former ways. May I praise your name in the good times and the tough times. Help me to learn the importance of controlling my words and may only praise come forth from my mouth. When I face trials of being slandered, help me to be slow in my response, show me how to forgive, and give me courage to keep walking forward. For your glory to be magnified. Amen!"
DÍA 04: SANTIDAD EN MEDIO DE LA PERSECUCIÓN

“Y la calumnia de los que se dicen ser judíos y no lo son, sino sinagoga de Satanás.”
El viejo adagio "Palos y piedras pueden romper mis huesos, pero las palabras nunca me harán daño" no es cierto. Las palabras pueden hacer mucho daño a los que han sido calumniados. En pocas palabras, la calumnia es una mentira maliciosa. Y sabemos que Dios odia la mentira (Proverbios 6:16-19, 12:22). La Biblia tiene mucho que decir acerca de la calumnia y su naturaleza maligna. La calumnia está llena de falsedades, se opone directamente a la naturaleza de Dios por lo que a Dios le resulta repulsiva. Como seguidores de Jesús debemos estar atentos a nuestra propia lengua cuidándonos de no hablar falsedades y caer en la trampa de convertirnos en calumniadores nosotros mismos
La calumnia era una forma de persecución que enfrentaban los cristianos de la Iglesia de Esmirna. Probablemente perdieron trabajos, enfrentaron prisión e incluso la muerte como resultado de las calumnias de la gente. Sería muy fácil querer combatir la calumnia con calumnia. Y, sin embargo, eso no es lo que Dios nos ha llamado a hacer. El Nuevo Testamento hace referencia a la calumnia como parte de nuestra vieja naturaleza pecaminosa. La calumnia no tiene cabida en nuestras vidas cuando nos convertimos en nuevas criaturas en Cristo (2 Corintios 5:17).
Colosenses 3:7-8
“Ustedes solían hacer esas cosas cuando su vida aún formaba parte de este mundo; pero ahora es el momento de eliminar el enojo, la furia, el comportamiento malicioso, la calumnia y el lenguaje sucio.
Aquellos que conocen a Dios tienen la responsabilidad de abstenerse de calumniar: “Con la lengua bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a las personas, creadas a imagen de Dios. De una misma boca salen bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así” Santiago 3:9–10 NVI
La calumnia es una práctica que debe morir en nosotros si tenemos la intención de seguir a Jesús (véase Romanos 6:11–14). Entonces, ¿cómo mantenemos nuestro andar en santidad incluso cuando caemos bajo la persecución de la calumnia?
Aquí hay algunos consejos útiles, aunque reconozco que no son fáciles:
Seamos tardos para hablar (Santiago 1:19-20)
Perdonemos (Mateo 6:14-15)
Enfrentemos al calumniador bíblicamente (Mateo 18:15-17)
Con esto en mente, oremos pidiéndole a Dios que nos ayude a controlar nuestra propia lengua para caminar fielmente aún en medio de la calumnia.
EJEMPLO DE ORACIÓN
Dios santo, gracias por tu perdón y por liberarme de mis caminos anteriores. Que pueda alabar tu nombre en los tiempos buenos y en los tiempos difíciles. Ayúdame a aprender la importancia de controlar mis palabras y que de mi boca sólo salgan alabanzas. Cuando enfrente pruebas y sea calumniado, ayúdame a ser lento en mi respuesta, muéstrame cómo perdonar y dame valor para seguir caminando hacia adelante. Para que tu gloria sea magnificada. ¡Amén!
