“ ‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first.' "
We are saved by God’s grace and not because of our own works. This distinction is an important part of our theology. Sometimes in our tradition of Evangelical Christianity, our focus on this critical truth has a side effect that we believe our works are not important to God. Revelation (and the New Testament as a whole) actually does speak frequently about the expectation of and importance of doing good works.
Take some time to read and pray about these verses from Ephesians:
Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I love the side-by-side description of the grace of God that saves us. We don't do something to get this gift we receive it through faith. And all of this leads to the fulfillment of God's plans for us to be made good and to do good works!
Sample Prayer
“God, by your grace alone I am saved. I cannot earn your favor by becoming worthy of you. Jesus was the only perfect and worthy One. I think about the fact that He died for sinners like me and I pause to say thank you! I think about the fact that He rose again to life and was exalted to Heaven. As I think about that, I pray that your Kingdom would come on Earth as it is in Heaven. And as I think about the good works you have prepared for me to do, I ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to fill me and equip me for that work.”
Día 17: Amor y Servicio
Apocalipsis 2:19 (TLA)
‘Estoy enterado de todo lo que haces. Sé muy bien que me amas y que no has dejado de confiar en mí; también sé que has servido a los demás, y que ahora los estás ayudando mucho más que al principio.
Somos salvos por la gracia de Dios y no por nuestras propias obras. Esta distinción es una parte importante de nuestra teología. A veces, en nuestra tradición del cristianismo evangélico, nuestro enfoque en esta verdad fundamental tiene el efecto secundario de que creemos que nuestras obras no son importantes para Dios. Apocalipsis (y el Nuevo Testamento en su conjunto) en realidad habla con frecuencia sobre la expectativa y la importancia de hacer buenas obras.

Me encanta la descripción lado a lado de la gracia de Dios que nos salva. No hacemos algo para obtener este regalo, lo recibimos por medio de la fe. ¡Y todo esto conduce al cumplimiento de los planes de Dios para que seamos buenos y hagamos buenas obras!
Ejemplo de oración:
“Dios, solo por tu gracia soy salvo. No puedo ganar tu favor haciéndome digno de ti. Jesús fue el único perfecto y digno. Pienso en el hecho de que Él murió por pecadores como yo y hago una pausa para decir ¡gracias! Pienso en el hecho de que Él resucitó y fue exaltado al Cielo. Mientras pienso en eso, oro para que tu Reino venga a la Tierra como lo es en el Cielo. Y mientras pienso en las buenas obras que me has preparado para hacer, pido el poder del Espíritu Santo para que me llene y me prepare para esa obra”.
